Seagate hard disk service - Bangalore

Recently, my hard drive died. Thankfully, it was a slow death - gave me a number of days advance notice and then passed away gracefully. If only celebrities and some other people could....well, thats for another post!

Since this was the case, I was able to purchase a new hard drive and transfer all important data onto the new drive beforehand. I knew my older hard drive was in warranty and tried to locate information on where I would need to go to get it replaced.

Now started the hellish work of locating information. We seem to have so much access to information but very little real, useful information!! Anyways, to cut a long story short - here follow the details for the Seagate service center in Bangalore.

This is completely taken care of by Accel Frontline Services. Their address:
No. 2 & 3, New Raja Building
Narasimha Raja Road,
Opp Town Hall
Above Andhra Bank
Bangalore - 560 002
Phone: 080 41129213 and 080 41129214 (forget these numbers, they never pick the phone!) Thanks to Surya for the updated phone numbers.

The only problem with this address (on the internet when I was searching) was that they conveniently forgot to mention that most famous landmark - Town Hall. If they had mentioned that on the sites, would have made things a lot more easier.

Best way to reach this place is locate and reach TownHall. Go forward from there (if TownHall is on your left) towards the Mysore Road flyover. Just after the signal, the New Raja Building is on your left. Look out for the Andhra Bank on the ground floor. Accel services are on the 2nd floor.

Now, before you rush off - note that you will need to create a profile on their site before you take your defective hard drive to them. This is compulsory and if you do it beforehand, it will save you the trouble of having to scream at their staff! You can register at their site - http://myservice.accelwms.in/index.aspx by selecting Seagate from the vendor list and creating a new profile link on the next page. Thankfully, I had done that. Once you have registered, all you have to do is take the drive to them, get a token from the damn helpful little security guy there, wait your turn and give the drive over to the damn helpful person at the counter. Their warranty checker never works, so check for your warranty status before you go there. You will need to give them your profile id (where you'd created it on their site) and done - they will swallow your drive and let you know when you can go and collect a replacement drive.

Oh and the link to check the warranty of your drive - Seagate Warranty Check.

Another update that Surya has provided - "In case if anyone wants to take a back up before they go there and submit the HD, send a mail to india_cso@accelfrontline.in and once you receive reply from them, go ahead with backup. At the time of submission of hard-disk, all you need to submit is a print of the e-mail and invoice of the data recovery service provider."

Update on the working days/timings for Accel from Chandra - working hours will be 9:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m Monday to Saturday (2nd Saturday holiday)

  1. Thank you for posting this. I found this very useful. I tried for a few hours to figure out where this place was through phone calls but gave up in disgust since as you said, they don't pick up their numbers.

Anyhow, after returning my disk (which stopped working a few days after purchase), I am quite clear - I am NEVER going to purchase a Seagate disk again. NO SEAGATE EVER.

  4. Hello Tapas!
Thanks for landing on the blog. Have you tried this page on Seagate that gives you some diagnostic tools?

  8. Hello Avay - I have never used any data recovery experts but I remember trying to get some info some years back. Back then, stellarinfo were quite famous. You can try approaching them - do a search on the net for their address and contact details. However, please note that I have not used them and cannot comment on their work.

  11. Hey all,

I bought a 500gb expansion drive from ebay and while it was in watrranty, the connector port got dispaced. I could not connect the drive to my laptop but the drive was full of data.

Here's what i did, I got a permission from Accel infoline to open the hard drive for data retrieval. I e-mailed them at india_cso@accelinfoline.in and got the permission in 24 hrs.

After that i took the hard drive to a local guy and asked to him retreive the data and then sign on the hard copy of the email with permission in it. Then i went to accel's office near town hall and submitted the damaged drive. They will issue a replacment soon.

Please make sure you seek permissiom before opening the drive for data retrieval else your warranty goes void. I hope this helps.

P.S. I got all this information from Accel's helpline number 3007 8348. Thankfully they picked up my call :)

    I hope this helps!

  13. Hi Naveen,

Thanks for this blog. This is really useful information for Seagate users.

I have Seagate 160 GB external hard disk which is still under warranty. The mini USB port in the hard disk has got displaced.

I called their helpline number 080-3007 8348. Fortunately they picked up the call. The person is saying that since there is an external damage, this part cannot be replaced. Is this true?

Also, do you know of any local guys in Bangalore who will retrieve the data? Probably I need to take permission of Accel as mentioned by Samreen before data retrieval.

  23. Anony-mouse :) - Yes, they are open on Saturdays as far as I am aware. I remember that I went there on a Saturday. No, don't bother calling, they don't usually pick! But like Samreen has mentioned, try calling on 080 3007 8348.

Sudip - Glad to be of help. I know how much of a pain losing data can be! It doesn't take too long for them to provide a replacement. IIRC, they asked me to collect my replacement drive in just 3 days time!

Kamal - Since the replacement is surely provided by Seagate, it doesn't take long. As I've replied to Sudip above, it just took 3 days. Hopefully you will also get it soon.

  42. Hi Naveen, my 500 GB seagate Hard disk is not recognized. It is giving a beep sound when connected. I went to SP road for the data recovery. They said they will charge 1000 for 1GB. Im not sure what might be the problem.

  43. Data recovery is expensive.. Usually about USD10 per 1GB... But most data are retrievable because the OS may be corrupted, or the connector damaged..If you do not hear a `click, click' sound, chances the data can be recovered. Click sound MAY be a mechanical problem. Or virus :)...see if you can zap those nasty viruses!
If your drives cannot be detected, chances are the OS is corrupted. Use the drive as a slave, connect to another PC with a working master drive, and see if you can access the `defective' slave drive..
When you want to do data recovery, just recover the data (photos, eecel, doc files)... Don't waste money recovering programs, OS, games because these recovered programs won't work again....
Don't compare 3year old drives with present drives.. The data now are packed closer and if you don't handle them well, they will fail you.. Just think of your cramped Indian Trains.....

  44. @ HDD avenger - thanks for helping out Anonymouse there! I don't have too much idea on data recovery but know that it is quoted quite costly. Shiver!!

I send the mail but didn't get a reply/permission yet.. Can i go ahead with data recovery..?

But no responsibility for the data, they asked me to send a mail (india_cso@accelfrontline.in) to the company by seeking permission to open the device for data recovery from a third party to get warranty. I did send the mail but didn't get a reply/permission yet. Can i go ahead with data recovery..? Warranty..?

A sad story is.. I bought this damn HDD when my great laptop dead, i took all backup from my laptop and copied all other data to HDD and using it for 6 months... Good Time..!! what else to say..

Same story here @ Chennai - Hard to locate and no use of calling Accel Frontline.. and then I managed to locate service center and gave my drive. After 2 weeks, they gave me a Go-flex (Instead of Free Agent)and in the box it says 2 years warranty.. This piece is not registered in the website and I'm worried, if I will be getting a 2 or 3 more year warranty. ??

However the drive is still functional. I guess its only a matter of time before it dies. Do you know if they'll accept such a drive for warranty replacement? Or is only a dead one accepted?

  58. Hello Santosh!

You are lucky - like I was in terms of the hard disk dying. It is slowly dying, so I would suggest that you quickly copy over all the important data into another hard drive. Since SeaTools basic test has failed, I am pretty sure they will replace this drive under warranty.

Their warranty checker never works, so check for your warranty status before you go there. I am not sure if this will be covered under warranty. Why don't you call them and check. And AFAIK, no, Seagate will not pay you for you backing up your data - this is not a perfect world, my friend :)

  88. Hello Naren!

Well, if it is not even detected in the BIOS, I would suggest you check to see if there are any loose connections and if there is power to the HDD. If it still does not get detected, would suggest you get it replaced.

  92. Hey,

Thanks for your post. I would have never found the office through the official channels (they still have the old address on their web page).

Since the registration page does not work, I simply went there. Just like that. The friendly staff just gave me a paper snipped and asked to write down name, address, phone number and email contact. That's all. There was even no waiting time. I am just hoping, they keep it up the way it is. That they cannot rescue the data on my broken 2TB hard disk, is not their fault.

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  99. @thetrooper83 - you can send them a mail and get their permission to recover the data by a third party vendor. Then get data recovered and replace the drive at Accel.

Another update - carry all accessories when going. My friend was asked to send a mail, get permission after the tag was missing from the USB cable!

  115. Thanks for the info. Really helped me.

People here at IISc use the service by Stellar for data recovery. I have never seen a single file missing after their recovery.

On the downside, their service is really, really costly. We generally do not go their until the click of death. Before that, its better to try yourself and recover it from linux / DOS.

  116. Hello Saikat! Glad to have been of help. And thanks for providing info about Data Recovery - hopefully I can point it out to people who ask for it. But when you say pricey - do they calculate in terms of GB recovered? Any idea how much it is per GB?

Yes, I agree about Linux / DOS - I recently helped out a colleague in office with Ubuntu. The HDD wasn't detected at all in Windblows.

Hi Naveen, Thanks for the info about the Accel.
My Seagate Hard disk which is in warranty is not working.
i am having important data in my Hard Disk and it is in Warranty.
If i go to any vendor for Recovery, they will open the casing to try for Data Recovery, in this case i will loose my warranty.

Kindly give some info on this case.

    Chandra.

    ReplyDelete
  118. @ Chandra - Do send a mail to india_cso@accelfrontline.in asking permission to open the device for data recovery from a third party. Once they reply and give you their permission, then only proceed with data recovery. Otherwise, they will not honour the warranty.

It was purchased in Canada. If i enter the country as Canada it shows no records, but entering it as India shows the above said results. Do i assume that the warranty is over ?

  122. Hi Naveen,

I have Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500 GB Harddisk, Two days ago, I tried to connect my harddrive with CentOS which was working under VM. I didn't do anything. But after that when I tried to use my device in Windows 7, my drive was not visible in my computer. I checked in Disk Management also but there also my drive was not visible. I can see my drive is visible under "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers". I can close my device from Safely Remove Hardware. I checked my Hard disk cable when I connect with Laptop, it glows white light which means power is reaching to drive. I checked my hard disk in another 2 laptops which is having windows OS but no luck. Could you please provide some idea or troubleshoot technique. I tried some troubleshooting which I saw from Seagate support but it didn't work out. I have 450 GB data in disk. Should I go for replacement & How can I recover my data?

It would be great if you can suggest something. Waiting for your positive quick response

Is it true that they wont do service in bangalore and just send it to chennai for all the customers? Are they making this story so that customer wont ask for immdiate resolution? How much will it cost me to backup 1 TB of data? The cost of storing the data by the recovery company till HD is repaired is also included?

My 1TB Seagate GoFlex External HDD suddenly was not opening. I was receiving an error msg "The drive is not formatted do u want to format it now". So after formatting the drive I was able to open the drive & recovered my files using a recovery software. The HDD was working fine for 2-3 days & again suddenly it refused to open. I formatted it again & lost all the data in it.
I want to know what exactly is the problem with the drive? Will I get a replacement (it works fine after formatting) as it is still under warranty?

  156. Hi Naveen,
First of all thanx for ur post. My HD model is STAC2000100 2TB external and the detachable adapter is causing the problem. It's one and half year old. I remember it having warranty of 3 years.
The dealer gave me the bill of wrong serial number. So, I tried the warranty checker link. But it shows:

"The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
If you purchased this unit directly from Seagate, please return to the previous page and verify your Seagate customer number, because the customer number you entered ( IA12031885 ) does not match our records."

Is there anyother possibily to check my warranty?
Does it need to backup my data before going to service centre, as i have only problem with adapter not HD?
Or CAn you help me to find shores to buy that adapter?

    1. I would suggest that you try and create a profile on the Accel site. They will charge you for any work though.

  168. First of all naveen, thanks for all the info!Very detailed, specific and even after 2 years you still continue to reply to all the queries and comments.Hats off to you!I am planning to go to Accel tomorrow to get my Seagate Free Agent Go Flex portable 1 TB hard drive checked out since it is giving alot of problems(stuff doesn't get copied to and from it)inspite of formatting, running a complete disk check and using the seatools to try and fix it.It fails in all the diagnostic seatools tests so i think that means it needs to be replaced. It is in warranty period but is almost 2years old.The model isn't around anymore so if they have to make a replacement, will they give me another model or will they say they can't do it since the model is discontinued?

    1. Hey, no worries. Glad to be of help. I remember how badly I wanted this information when I wanted it! I have this colleague I helped out with this information some time back. He had the same model drive - the 1 TB drive. The drive wasn't getting detected in windows and he couldn't copy data. I was able to copy data for him through a SATA connection on my desktop so all was fine on the data front. And he tells me that he even got the drive replaced at Accel. Though it is an older model, as long as it is within warranty, they will replace/fix it for you.

Good luck and let me know how it goes...

  170. Hi Naveen, Ur blog is helping lots of people. Thanks a lot for that. I have a similar problem. My External harddisk is not working. I had been to Amartha info, New Raja Building.
There the door was closed and the customers were very angry standing outside. There were customers who were waiting for more than 5 months to get a replacement. Every Time the service center guys are telling the hard disk are out of stock, it has to come from chennai. As of my knowledge both the centres (Amartha info and Accel Frontline Services) service have become worst. Need to get feedback from recent visitors. Otherwise I will loose my harddisk and also data.
